Do you pay customs duties on orders from China? Duties, VAT/GST and declarations
When you buy from Taobao, JD or other Chinese stores and ship abroad, destination duties and VAT/GST are generally paid by the recipient. Learn who pays, how declarations work, when a declaration fee applies, and why no service fee does not mean tax-free.

Duties and VAT/GST are generally paid by the recipient
International shipments are controlled by the destination country's customs. Any import duties, VAT/GST, customs inspection fees or clearance fees charged at the destination are generally the recipient's responsibility and are paid to local customs or the carrier. The recipient also needs to provide any import information the destination requires. These charges are set by the destination country; they are not ChinaCarty fees.
No service fee does not mean tax-free
There is no ChinaCarty service fee on international shipping: you pay only freight and any optional services you confirm. That does not make the parcel tax-free. Destination duties and VAT/GST follow local rules, and the amount may not be known when you are quoted. When comparing total costs, consider possible taxes separately.
How customs decide what to charge
Countries generally look at the type of goods, declared value, quantity and purpose when deciding whether duty applies and at what rate. Many countries have thresholds or allowances for personal imports, but they differ by country and change over time. This page does not list rates or thresholds; check your national customs authority's official website. Valuation and tax decisions are made by the destination country, and we cannot change them.
How we help with declarations
We prepare compliant declaration documents based on what the goods actually are and declare them accurately. Customers must state product names, quantities, use, brand and any sensitive attributes truthfully, and provide real recipient and clearance information. We do not accept under-declared values, false product names, split parcels intended to avoid regulations or shipments to prohibited destinations, and may ask for more information to complete compliance checks.
When a customs declaration fee applies
Most orders have no separate customs declaration fee. We charge it only when the courier requires it, and it is itemized in the quote before payment. A declaration service fee is not the same as destination duty or import tax; keep the two apart when comparing costs.
Inspections, delays and clearance documents
Customs inspections are normal enforcement by each country's authorities. ChinaCarty is not directly liable for delays, fines, returns or seizures caused by destination customs inspections, but we help provide the clearance documents you need. If your country requires a tax number or other identification for personal imports, have it ready and mention it when you ask for a quote.

Frequently asked questions
Will I always pay customs duty on a parcel from China?
Not necessarily. Whether duty applies, and at what rate, is decided by the destination country based on the goods, their value and local rules. Any duties, VAT/GST or clearance fees are generally paid by the recipient. Check your customs authority's official information.
Does a ChinaCarty quote include import duties?
Usually not. The quote covers the items, domestic shipping, service fee, international shipping and optional services. Destination duties and VAT/GST arise under local rules, and the amount may not be known when you are quoted.
Can you declare a lower value so I pay less tax?
No. We declare goods accurately and do not accept under-declared values, false product names or split parcels intended to avoid regulations.
Is a customs declaration fee the same as import duty?
No. A declaration fee is a service charge for preparing the declaration; most orders do not have one, and when a courier requires it, it is itemized in the quote. Duties and VAT/GST are taxes charged by the destination country.
What if customs holds my parcel?
Customs inspections and decisions are made by the destination country, and we cannot intervene or accept direct liability for resulting delays, fines, returns or seizures. We will help provide the clearance documents you need.
